From souvenirs to local crafts, there is plenty of merchandise to choose from in this duty-free shopping area. After you have finished exploring the shops, you can relax on the nearby beach or take a dip in the crystal clear waters of Roatan. It is about 5 miles from the island’s capital, Coxen Hole, which is also where the other cruise port is situated. Roatan is one of three islands that are 31 miles off the coast of mainland Honduras, and it is the biggest and most populated of the three.

To the right side of the exiting walkway, it is impossible to miss the Magical Flying Beach Chair. This chairlift service transports guests from the main plaza directly to white sand of Mahogany Beach - the all day pass costs $14 USD. If you prefer, there is a shaded path to Mahogany Beach which is around 15 minutes walk away. Most cruisers do not realize that there are two distinct ports and terminals in Roatán.
Dune Buggy Rides
Sandy Bay is a residential area on Roatan’s northwestern shore featuring hotel resorts, restaurants and a beautiful beach that is part of the Roatan Marine Park preserve. The beach offers amazing snorkeling just a 200-meter swim from shore. Also known as the Port of Roatan, this is the smaller of the two terminals and was named after the pirate John Coxen.
You can get off the ship and spend the day reading on a beach chair or swimming in the crystal clear waters. Isla Roatan is a major cruise port (locode HNRTB) in the Southern Caribbean, located approx 65 km (40 mi) off the northern coast of mainland Honduras (North America). It has length 53 km (33 mi), width 7 km (4 mi), total land area approx 83 km2 (32 mi2) and population around 45,000. Like many cruise ports in the Caribbean, the port itself has lots of facilities for shopping, dining, and drinking! This area is directly off the ship and is known as the “Town Center At Port of Roatan”. Mahogany Bay offers a range of amenities, including shopping, dining options, a private beach, restrooms, free Wi-Fi zones, and comfortable seating areas.

This tour will give you information about the history of the Garifuna people, their customs and traditions, and teach you about the land they live on. Here, you will see the different monkeys, sloths, and other tropical animals that live at the sanctuary and get to know a bit about each of their eating and sleeping habits. U.S. Dollars are widely used on Roatan island and there are several ATM machines where you may withdraw funds at the Town Center Mall. Preferably, it's best to use your credit cards for purchases, unless you run across a small vendor where you will be required to pay in U.S. Cash advances on your credit/debit cards are available at several of the banks on the island.
The Roatan Cruise Ports
Here’s a guide to the best restaurants at Mahogany Bay Cruise Port. The island of Roatán is 48 miles long and 5 miles wide at its widest point. It is safest to book tours (whether private or cruise ship excursions) to get around Roatán. Ships from all of the other cruise lines (besides those mentioned above) typically dock here.

I have put together a full list of the best Roatan tours that are available based on some of the feedback we heard from our fellow passengers and on our own experience. My wife Morag has a thing about Sloths, so we had to include an opportunity to cuddle some sloths in our Itinerary. Equally, there were lots of Beach tours available, as well as Diving and Snorkeling. Walk past the Lookout Bar and you will reach the small town proper. This is a poor area, so don’t expect to be doing any designer shopping.
What's at the Coxen Hole Cruise Terminal
Coxen Hole has a smaller shopping area with local vendors, handicrafts, and souvenirs. The variety of cruise lines visiting Roatan ensures that there’s something for everyone, whether it’s a family adventure, a luxurious getaway, or a culturally enriching experience. Throughout the year, the island plays host to a variety of cruise lines, each offering unique experiences and itineraries that include Roatan as a key port of call. I am the creator of an e-book “Mediterranean Cruise Port Guide“, the most comprehensive guide to 45 Mediterranean cruise ports, & YouTube channel @AdventourBegins. Sightseeing tours are a great way to soak up some local history and culture, learn about impressive flora and fauna, and explore the island’s major attractions. These tours will allow you to explore locations such as Chocolate and Rum Factories, scenic villages, breathtaking beaches, and eco-parks.
You’ll also learn everything you need to know about visiting the Roatán cruise port for the day and get answers to commonly asked questions. The largest of the two ports in Roatán is the Mahogany Bay Cruise Center, located on the southwest coast of the island and owned by Carnival corporation. Obviously, this is the docking port (and Terminal) for Carnival ships but also for Princess, Holland & America, and all other cruise lines belonging to this corporation. The cruise ports are well-secured and patrolled by security guards and police officers. The cruise lines also work closely with the local authorities and tour operators to ensure the safety and comfort of their passengers. However, this does not mean that you should let your guard down or ignore the common-sense precautions.
Mahogany Bay is located on the west end of the isla Roatan in the country of Honduras. Nestled in the protected southern waters of Dixon Cove, the port offers over 20 acres for passengers to enjoy. With its sparkling white sand beaches and warm Caribbean waters, it’s easy to see why so many travelers love Mahogany Bay. For many, it is their favorite port of call, and we are going to see why with this guide. PORT OF ROATAN is one of two major port of calls in Roatan Honduras. Port of Roatan is managed by Royal Caribbean and ITM Group as partners under a subsidiary.
No transportation is needed to get to the beach as it’s right near the cruise port, although you can try the chair lift to make it easier (more on this later). You can take a dolphin cruise, go snorkeling along the coral reef, or even try out kayaking in the bay. For those looking for more of an adventure, you can dive into the depths of Gumbalimba reef with a scuba dive or sail off on a catamaran tour from West End.
